銀離子為什麼能殺菌呢？
因為銀對液體中的微生物具有吸附作用，微生物被銀吸附後，起呼吸作用的酶就失去功效，微生物就會迅速死亡。銀離子的殺菌能力特別強，每升水中只要含億萬分之二毫克的銀離子，即可殺死水中大部分細菌。美國一科學家曾做過試驗，他將4.5升污水(每毫升含大腸桿菌七千多個)經過3小時的銀電極處理後，所有大腸桿菌全部死亡。傷寒菌在銀片上只能活18個小時，白喉菌在銀片上只能活3天。

正是由於銀的殺菌能力很強，又對人畜無任何傷害，目前，世界上超過半數的航空公司已使用銀製的濾水器。許多國家的游泳池也用銀來淨化，淨化後的水不會像使用化學藥品淨化的水那樣，刺激游泳者的眼睛和皮膚。
